Brazil's declaration of a republic in 1889 was led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, who became the nation's first president after centuries of Portuguese and imperial rule came to an end. Under the new republic, Brazil adopted a flag carrying four words at its center, a motto meant to guide the young nation forward.
The national motto, "Ordem e Progresso" ("Order and Progress"), was inspired by the positivist philosophy of the era and still appears on the flag today. Order and progress are Brazil's own words for something every nation in this hemisphere is quietly working toward, together.
